I think that reproductive technology opens many doors for creating a healthier population. The option of picking genetics for a child has the potential to diminish human dignity but if people don't abuse the opportunity technology gives us, it can prevent many health issues. As long as reproductive technology is monitored, human dignity will be preserved.
I agree with Alex that human dignity will not diminish as long as people do not abuse it. However, like the articles we read for class, reproductive technologies can turn children into a business. Parents can choose the appearance of their child, and also have some choice in the child's personality (right?). however, what if the child, due to environment or something, does not turn out the way the parents thought he/she would. would the parents still want the child?
I think that new reproductive technology opens up opportunities for couples who want a child but are unable to. Although this technology can be used in a good way, when people start picking genetics for their child it can diminsh human dignity. Picking the sex, physical charestics, and even diseases and disorders take away from the human dignity. If someone needs to use reproductive technology they should be happy they can have a child and accept their characteristics or disorders they may have. Picking and choosing their child's characteristics can be looked at as taking advantage of reproductive technology because if they were able to have a child naturally they would not have the opportunity to make these choices.
Lisa brings up a good point that the biological parents of a child cannot choose his/her characterstics, and thus an infertile couple should not be able to do so. This would provide an unfair advantage to infertile couples (provided the child grows up to be the way the parents thought s/he would). If people are free to choose the characteristics of their children, they would obviously choose more intelligent, athletic, etc. kids that are free of genetic disorders, etc. Thus, kids without these qualities will never be born. This cannot be allowed if we value all human lives equally. Infertile couples should utilize reproductive technology to have a child, not to "choose" the child. However, that aside, we must push forward with research and development of such technology, as it could lead to breakthrough improvements for future lives.
I agree with Raman and Lisa that the parents of children born from reproductive technology should not be allowed to choose characteristics of the child. Also as Raman said, the children born with poor characteristics would probably never be born. However, if they are born then they will most likely be treated poorly because they are not a "perfect" child. If reproductive technology is only used for the creation of a child, then it will not diminish human dignity. When we start "choosing" children is when human dignity is diminished. I also agree with Alex that reproductive technology has the potential to eliminate genetic diseases. This is a great development, however, it would be easy for corruption to occur, and parents would choose their child's characteristics.
I agree that the parents should not be able to choose the charactersticis they want for their child. i agree with Nicole's comment in the sense that by parents choosing specific characteristic's for their child they are eliminating the natural way of having a child. NAturally, parents accept and love their child for who they are, no matter what characteristics God has given them. I believe in a way it also goes against God, because I believe God creates all of us the way we are for a special reason, and when we choose characteristics and "shop" for our children, we are going against what having a child is truly about. I also agree with Alex tho because technology can help children to be healthier, and in the long run eliminate genetic diseases, making it easier for parents to care for their children.
